Betty Mae Eckstine, 91, of Smithsburg, MD, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2019 at Shook Home of Chambersburg, PA.
Born Saturday, April 14, 1928 in Smithsburg, MD, she was the daughter of the late Howard R. Kendall, Sr. and Charlotte C. (Yowler) Kendall.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Richard W. Eckstine whom passed away June 18, 2010. They were married January 10, 1948.
She was a graduate of Smithsburg High School class of 1948.
Betty was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Smithsburg serving as a youth leader for many years and the church organist for over 50 years. She was also a member of The Ladies of the Elks Club #378 of Hagerstown.
She was employed through the years as a telephone operator in Smithsburg, Fairchild Aircraft of Hagerstown, Grove Weatherproofing of Hagerstown and retired from Fort Detrick (USAMRIID) of Frederick as a budget analyst.
She held a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her dachshunds and spending time laughing with family and friends but most of all, she loved her church. She was an amazing lady.
Betty is survived by son, Dennis W. Eckstine and wife Patricia of Waynesboro, PA, grandsons, Matthew B. Eckstine and wife Rachael of Hagerstown, MD, and Andrew R. Eckstine and wife Cynthia of Glendale, CA, great-grandchildren, Bryant and Benjamin, brother, Reginald Kendall and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Gloria Jones and three brothers, Phillip Kendall, Larry Kendall and Howard Kendall, Jr.
Services will be held Friday, July 5, 2019 at 11:00am at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Smithsburg, MD, with Pastor Mary Ricketts officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8pm at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, MD.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Betty Eckstine to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 205 Smithsburg, MD 21783.
