JOAN LEE ABEL

Joan Lee Abel, 88, of Shady Grove, PA, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2023, at the home of her daughter, Cynthia Shugars, Thurmont, MD.

Born March 28, 1934, in Slippery Rock, PA, she was the daughter of the late Carl E. Hockenberry and Martha (Best) Hockenberry.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to so many.

Joan loved to crochet, sew, garden, and enjoyed cooking.

She was a full-time mom and then worked for the Ben Franklin Craft Store in Damascus, MD, and Sears in Frederick, MD, retiring in 1987.

Joan is survived by her husband of 67 years, Charles E. Abel, daughters, Cynthia Shugars of Thurmont, MD, and Carolyn Owens (Timothy) of Hagerstown, MD, sons, Charles H. Abel (Christine) of Kearneysville, WV, and Jerry Abel (Sherry) of Springs, PA, eight grandchildren, Robert Shugars, Jr. (Corki), Jennifer Nichols (Jamie), Angela Auldridge (Isaac), Paige Owens (Jacob Rockwell), Ryan, Becky, and Sam Abel, Tyler Bennet (Samantha), eight great-grandchildren; one stepbrother, Robert Hockenberry of Meadville, PA, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Joan is preceded in death by her stepmother Erma Jane Reedy Hockenberry, four brothers, Carl Jr., Floyd, Frank, and Jefferson, and her twin-sister, Josephine Dillaman.

Interment will be private. At the convenience of the family, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
