Melvin Richard Smith, 96, born February 25,1930 passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2026, to join his beloved wife, Shirley L. [Hiltner] Smith. Shirley passed on February 24, 2023.
Married for 72 years, Melvin and Shirley, raised 6 children and touched countless lives with their kindness and friendships they have made along the way.
Melvin will be remembered for “his warm humor, hard work ethic, and love of his John Deere mower”, while Shirley will be cherished for “caring for children, her gentle spirit, creative heart, and boundless compassion”.
Though their time apart was brief, their reunion in heaven is a comfort to all who knew them.
Their legacy of love will live on in the hearts of their family, friends, and community.
They are survived by Sandy Flook (Allen), Gary Smith, Cathy Leatherman (Kevin), Janet Andrews (Dave), Mark Smith, daughter-in-law, Sharon Smith, Melvin’s sister, LuCee [Lucy] Whitter, 10 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, and predeceased by son, Allen R. Smith, sister, Joann Clifford, brother, Eugene Smith, Daughter-in-law, Dawn Smith, 1 granddaughter, 1 great-granddaughter. Shirley had 11 siblings which are all deceased.
A joint memorial of their lives will be held on Saturday, 5/16/2026 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg MD.
Visitation with the family is welcome to all, starting at 1:00pm. At 2:00pm service by Pastor Dana Mersereau.
The family would like to thank everyone at Fahrney-Keedy Nursing home for their excellent love and care for both Melvin and Shirley while they were there.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Fahrney-Keedy Nursing home or charity of your choice.
