Bernard Lawrence "Bernie" Gaver

Bernard Lawrence Gaver, 93, of Myersville, MD, has left us to be with his grandson, on August 5, 2019. He leaves behind his wife, Evelyn Babington Gaver, of 70 years, which they celebrated on April 16, 2019. He was born July 6, 1926, in Harmony, MD, to Ralph and Mildred (Baker) Gaver. He attended schools in Myersville and Middletown and worked on the family farm on Harp Hill until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 at the age of 18. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theatre, and after the war ended, he finished his tour in Japan. After returning to the states he held various jobs as mail carrier, mechanic, water and sewer operator for the town of Myersville, and worked for 36 years as a maintenance mechanic at a cement factory in Hagerstown, formerly known as Marquette Cement. Bernard attended Harmony Church of the Brethren. Along with his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Linda Winfield, and Lois Gaver and husband Tim Brown, grandson, Ronnie Gladhill, and granddaughter, Crystal Uppercue and husband Kenny, great grandchildren, Kierstyn, Alex, Charlie, Caleb, Elizabeth, and Madison, siblings, Merle Gaver, Evelyn Venezky, and Donald Gaver. He was preceded in death by his parents, son in law, David Winfield and grandson, Gabriel Gary Lewis III. The family would like to thank the wonderful support given by his in-home caretakers, Jeannie, Sharon, Michelle, and Janice, and also the support of Frederick County Hospice, it was greatly appreciated. Services will be held Sunday, August 11, 2019 at 3:00pm at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, MD, with Pastor Tracy Wiser and Pastor Karen Grossnickle officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 1-3pm before the service.
