Edward D. “Ed” Ganley, 82, of Smithsburg, MD, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Hospice of Washington County, Doey’s House.
Born Thursday, May 14, 1936 in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Edward P. Ganley and Julia M. (Lanahan) Ganley. He grew up in Derwood, Md. He was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School of Rockville, MD, class of 1954, and RETS Electronic School of Baltimore, MD.
Ed was a veteran of the United States Navy from 1954-1958 serving on the U.S.S. Conway during the Cold War.
He retired from the Maryland State Police after 25 years of service and retired from Potomac Electric Power Company after 10 years of service.
Ed was a member of St. Andrew Apostle Catholic Church of Waynesboro, PA, the Maryland State Police Alumni Association, the U.S.S. Conway Reunion Association and the American Legion Post 15 of Waynesboro, PA.
Ed was a huge baseball fan and grew up attending the Washington Senators games at the old Griffith Stadium. He conveyed that love of baseball to his sons and was one of many founders of the Smithsburg Little Sluggers. The family spent many summer evenings at the baseball field. He proudly introduced his five grandsons to Fenway Park in Boston when he feared they would tear down the iconic stadium.
The family began camping in 1968 with a tenting trip across the U.S. and they continued camping for many years. After their sons were grown, Ed and Betty Jo loved going to Maine for the month of August. He loved traveling and spent many hours planning their trips. Two trips to Ireland with dear friends Hazel and Paul Morgan were especially memorable as journeys exploring his Irish heritage.
Ed loved sharing sea stories with other U.S.S. Conway veterans who gathered each year for reunions held all over the country. These reunions along with camping trips allowed him to plan journeys to all 50 states.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 61 years, Betty Jo (Wear) Ganley whom he married November 29, 1957, sons, Bryan Ganley, Patrick Ganley and wife Kathy and Steve Ganley and wife Carol, grandchildren, Nathan Ganley, Shane Ganley and wife Morgan, Cullan Ganley and wife Taylor, Colin Ganley and Connor Ganley, great-grandchildren, Zayden Ganley and Rylie Ganley, step great-grandchildren, Brennen Rosage and Alexis Rosage and their mother Miranda Ganley, sister-in-law’s, Mary Staley and Dot Barber and husband Jim and brother-in-law, Joe Wear and wife Kaye.
