Homer Myers Obituary

Homer Leon Myers, 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 27, 2019. Homer was born on November 17, 1934 in Hancock, MD to the late Grace M. (Hill) Robertson and Curtis R. Myers. He attended Hancock schools. He was a former Washington County Deputy Sheriff and Smithsburg Police Chief. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He retired from the Washington County Board of Education as Supervisor of Maintenance and Operations. In addition, he owned Smithsburg Home Style Laundry and Smithsburg Rental. He also was an investor in many properties. He was a member of Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren. He was a member of many different organizations, which includes Salem Lodge No. 196, BPO Elks No. 378, American Legion Dixon-Troxell Post 211, North American Rod & Gun Club, South Mountain Rod & Gun Club, Eagles Club Inc., Washington County Republican Club, Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Company, and the Smithsburg Historical Society. He served on the original Smithsburg Planning and Zoning Commission and when it was divided to establish the Board of Appeals he was appointed in that capacity, making him the longest serving member for which he received an award. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. The late Ralph Flowers, who was a well-known bear hunter and author, included Homer in the book The Education of a Bear Hunter for his bear hunting experiences. He leaves behind by his beloved and devoted wife of 67 years, Mildred (Mickey) L. Myers, which he married on October 11, 1952. He is survived by one son, Terry L. Myers and wife Cindy; and three daughters, Sharon W. Shank Roberson and husband Danny, DeAnna J. Doyle; and Susan E. Wolfe and husband Steve. He took extreme pride in his 11 grandchildren, Scott Shank (Kristin); Nina Wolfe; Jackie Kaetzel (Andy); Carrie Aaron (Patrick); Natalie Minnichbach (Jeff); Brent Myers (Melissa); Jamie Smith (Andy); Tommy Shank (Annalee); Michael Wolfe; Tessa Kirk (Reiley); and Mia Mertz (Sean). In addition, he is survived by 16 great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren; Adam Roberson (Robin) and Donavon Roberson (Anjie); and 6 step great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister, Colleen E. Sumner. In addition to his parents was he was preceded in death by his brothers Robert J. Myers and Richard M. Myers as well as his son-in-law John Scott Shank II. There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends from 4-9pm on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg, MD 21783. Doors will open at 9am for the convenience of the public. The funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday, January 3, 2020 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Smithsburg Cemetery. Pastor Rachel Black will be officiating.
