Markwin Eugene Gangestad, 66, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Hospice of Washington County, Doey’s House, of Hagerstown. Born Sunday, September 21, 1952 in Topeka, KS, he was the son of the late Melvin Eugene Gangestad and Barbara Ann (Gilbert) Gangestad. He was a graduate of Crossland High School in Temple Hills, MD, class of 1971 and attended Montgomery County Community College. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He retired from National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2016 after 32 years of service. He was a member of St. Peters Beards Lutheran Church of Hagerstown, MD, and Elks Lodge 378 of Hagerstown, MD. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Bonita “Bonnie” C.S. Gangestad whom he married December 16, 2000, daughter, Tammy R. (Gangestad) Myers and husband Jason, son, Markwin E. Gangestad, Jr. and wife Jeanette, granddaughter, Rhylee A. Gangestad, stepchildren, Ashley Eve S. Schettler, Alexander B. Schettler and wife Sara and Jeff Jones, sister-in-law’s, Anna Wolf and husband Larry and Rosalie Beadenkopff and husband Fred, brother-in-law, Paul Staples, cousins, Terry, Marsha and Mike and many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and colleagues. Services will be held Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 1:00pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg, MD, with Pastor Virgil Cain officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery with military honors provided by the Joint Veterans Council of Washington County and the Hagerstown Marine Corp League. The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 19, 2018 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, MD, with an Elks Lodge Service at 6pm.
