Nicholas Clinton “Nick” Vessa, 84, of Smithsburg, MD, passed away Friday, December 14, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born Monday, July 16, 1934 in Flushing, NY, he was the son of the late Nicholas Donald Vessa and Dorothy Clinton (Vandagriff) Vessa.
He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army.
Nick was a member of Salem Lodge 196 AF&AM of Smithsburg, Morris Frock American Legion post 42 of Hagerstown, South Mountain Rod and Gun Club of Smithsburg, United Auto Workers local 171, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services and a life member of the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company.
He attended Smithsburg Valley Baptist Church and was a member of the Power Pack.
He was employed over the years by Fairchild Aircraft of Hagerstown, Grove Funeral Home of Waynesboro, Kerfoot Livery Service of Hagerstown and Davis Funeral Home of Smithsburg. He retired from Mack Truck Inc. of Hagerstown in 1991 after 27 years of service.
Nick is survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Ellen Louise (Alexander) Vessa whom he married December 24, 1953, daughters, Deborah Kay Vessa and Barbara Ellen Vessa, brother, William C. Vessa and wife Sharon, brother-in-law, Ivan Tracey, sister-in-law, Rachel Smith, adopted family, Tracy Kendle and husband Barry, adopted grandchildren, David and wife Summer and Kayla and husband Logan, adopted great-grandchildren, Delainey and Calvin and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother John A. Vessa and his wife Lucy.
Services will be held Friday, December 21, 2018 at 10:00am at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, MD, with Pastor Allen Youngbar officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, MD, with military honors provided by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 honor guard.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9pm at the funeral home with a masonic service by Salem Lodge 196 AF&AM at 7pm.
