Richard Michael Schultz, Jr., 76, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019, surrounded by his loving family, after a lengthy illness. Rick, the son of the late Richard M. and Margaret F. Schultz, was born June 29, 1942. He and his family lived in Greencastle, PA, until 1954 when they moved to Hagerstown. Rick is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, the former Sandra Harris. Rick is a 1960 graduate from South Hagerstown High School. Additionally, he graduated from Hagerstown Junior College and attended Gettysburg College where he played football. Rick served in the United States Army and Air Force Reserve. He worked at State Farm Insurance Company of Frederick, Mack Trucks, Potomac Edison and numerous other insurance companies. Rick previously owned and operated the Jolly Keg on Jefferson Boulevard. He is remembered by many as being the “T.V. Man” at the Washington County Hospital. Rick was an avid sports fan beginning at the age of 3 when he discovered the Boston Red Sox. Rick played a variety of sports and coached many area youth teams. In 2012 he was inducted into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame. In 1976, Rick founded the Chewsville, Smithsburg, Leitersburg Athletic Association which has served thousands of youth. It is presently known as the Smithsburg Youth Association. In addition to his wife Sandra, Rick is survived by son, Dirk Schultz and wife Michelle and their two children Joelle and Jaxson; daughter, Nicole Starnes and husband Andy and their four children Evan, Aidan, Eli and Keira; son Dan Flick and wife Saglara; brother, Randy Schultz and wife Carol and their children Emily, Megan and Michael; sister-in-law, Sharon Miles and many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Rick was blessed with many devoted friends who were so valued by him and his family. He appreciated all the visits and calls during his illness. A celebration of Life will be held at Beaver Creek Country Club on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 6-9pm. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Richard M. Schultz, Jr. Scholarship, Smithsburg High School. Donations may be sent to, Smithsburg Youth Athletics, Attn: Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 21, Smithsburg, MD 21783.
