Anna Virigina Smith, 96, known to most as Granny or Granny Anne passed away peacefully at home with family by her side on Wednesday May 21st.
Anna was born on May 12, 1929 to the late Dallas and Anna Mowdy at home in Thurmont MD.
Anna attended Greensburg and Smithsburg Schools, and retired from Doubleday after 26 years.
Anna was a member of the ladies auxiliary at South Mountain Rod and Gun Club and was a volunteer at the Smithsburg Senior Center helping her dear friend Eleanor.
Anna spent many hours crocheting through the years, she made everyone a blanket when they were expecting a baby and baby doll dresses for the girls. She has made numerous blankets and scarves over the years for family and friends. In addition, she was known for her love of bingo. Anna had several friends over the years that ensured she made it to her bingo destination. Anna also loved baking, she was known for her apple dumplings, apple pies, fudge, chocolate cake with peanut butter icing, and potato candy among many other desserts she would make by request.
In the last several years Anna most enjoyed bingo, listening to gospel music, attending the cider press, and thrift shopping and going out to eat with her daughter-in-law.
In addition to her parents she was proceeded in death by her husband Calvin (Bus) William Smith Sr, her children, Judy Huntzberry, Calvin (Bill) Smith Jr. and Gary Smith as well as one grandson Craig Smith; Brothers, Ernest and Robert Mowdy, and an infant brother Ray, and a sister, Helen Smith.
Anna is survived by her daughter-in-law Teresa (Gary) Smith. 4 Grandchildren, Michael Green (Mary), Roger (Harve) Huntzberry Jr., Lisa Huntzberry (Cindy), Kara Acre (Joe). 7 Great Grandchildren, Kelly (Max), Kimberly (Gabriel), Katie (Josh), Cassidy, Ryker, Saylor and Torin, and 8 great-great grandchildren, Kirra, Cameron, Noah, Abel; Krystal, Kaylee, Emma; Connor. She is also survived by numerous extended family and special friends.
Friends and Family are invited to celebrate Anna’s life on June 1st at 2pm at Mt. Pleasant Church of God 24107 Foxville Rd Smithsburg, officiated by Rev. Tim Shirley. The family will receive visitors an hour prior to the service at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of Washington County 1710 Underpass Way, Suite 300 Hagerstown, MD 21740; , the family is grateful for the care and support they provided during Anna’s transition to Heaven.
