Betty Marie Calimer (Miller), 93, of Sabillasville, Maryland, peacefully passed from this life on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at her home of over 50 years.
Born on January 15, 1932 in Waynesboro, PA, she was the daughter of Ralph and Esther Miller (Harbaugh).
Betty was a dedicated mother and grandmother, and in most recent years a proud great grandmother. She was the loving mother of Connie Masser and Richard Calimer (Desiree), both of Sabillasville, MD. In addition to her children, she is survived by her grandchildren, Justin Masser (Rebecca), Brandon Masser (Elise), and Paige Hargett (Matthew), five great grandchildren, and a special nephew James Miller (Bonnie). She was predeceased by her husband, Calvin (Cally) Richard Calimer in 1965, and son-in-law, Richard M Masser.
A special thank you to Barb Sabine, Deborah Frey, and Crystal Cromwell who provided Betty with loving care during her last stage of life.
Betty’s love for the land and dedication to agriculture began as a young child visiting her grandparents on the family farm and extended throughout her life. She represented the fifth generation of the Harbaugh family farm, and was an owner of Scenic View Orchards in Sabillasville, MD. Her savvy business acumen was ahead of her time. She grew the business from selling produce on a table in her front yard to building a roadside market. She initiated going to farmers markets, worked in the roadside market, started growing flowers for cut flower bouquet sales, and kept the company books for forty-five years.
She was an active and dedicated member of the Deerfield United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer for over sixty years and pianist for forty years. She was a giving person, supporting the church, families in need in the community, and numerous charities.
Betty loved the outdoors. During the spring months, you could find her hunting morel mushrooms. In the summer months you could see her on the tractor in the fields. She enjoyed hunting whitetail deer in the fall. And in the winter months you would find her at on-site auctions in search of R.S. Prussia china and other treasures. Having played basketball in high school herself, she loved to watch and attend college basketball games, especially Virginia Tech and Mount St Mary College.
Betty enjoyed traveling with family and friends. She especially enjoyed traveling with her family to Idaho, Montana, Yellowstone Park, Canada, and Hawaii. Her most meaningful trip was to the Holy Lands and Germany with church members.
The family will receive friends at 1:00 on April 27, 2025 at the Weller United Methodist Church in Thurmont, Md. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at 2:00, with internment in the Weller Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or St Jude’s Hospital.
