Brenda Castle Obituary

Brenda K. Castle, 68, of Funkstown, MD, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD, surrounded by her loving family.

Born October 25, 1957, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of Doris (Smith) Hartle and the late Ray Hartle Sr.

She graduated from Smithsburg High School in 1975 and spent her life in the Washington County area.

Brenda retired in February 2024 from the Walmart Pharmacy Warehouse after 28 years and had previously worked at London Fog in Boonsboro for 17 years.

She was an avid slow pitch softball player for more than 20 years, spending the majority of her time with the Donegan’s team in the Frederick County Women’s League. They were the top women’s softball team in the state of Maryland for over 10 years, winning numerous league and Class A Championships across the United States.

She was always giving back to youth sports organizations while her children were growing up. She volunteered as an officer of BAAA, served as a cheerleading coach, and was a softball coach for the Washington County Girls Softball program for more than 10 years.

She was a beloved wife, mother, Grammy (Gram), and friend.

In addition to her mother, She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 50 years, Robert “Rob” Castle Jr., who spent the last 15 months faithfully by her side, caring for her in every way he could.

Of all the roles she cherished in life, none meant more to her than being Grammy (Gram). Her grandchildren were truly the light of her world, and she devoted herself wholeheartedly to cheering them on—whether she was bundled up at the softball field, applauding from the basketball bleachers, or celebrating every win and every effort in between. She treasured making memories with them through crafts, her elaborate holiday decorations, day long shopping trips, and the countless small moments that made each child feel loved and seen. She never missed a game, a school event, or any opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments. She was their biggest fan, their constant cheerleader, and their unwavering source of support in every season of their lives.

She is survived by her children: son Robert (Bobby) Castle III of Funkstown, and daughter Brandy Kreitz and husband Josh Kreitz of Thurmont, MD.

She is also survived by her grandchildren: Cole Warner and his girlfriend Samantha Lowe of Smithsburg, MD; Kassidy Kreitz and Addison Kreitz of Thurmont, MD; and great grandchildren Willow and Wesley Warner of Smithsburg, MD.

Her loyal dog, Babes, was her best friend and constant protector, faithfully by her side and watching over her every day.

Additional survivors include two sisters: Pam Butts and husband Randy Butts of Boonsboro, MD, and Tinna Mahoney and husband John of Hagerstown, MD; and four brothers: Ray Hartle Jr. and wife Lisa of Mercersburg, PA, Terry Hartle and wife Lynn of Williamsport, MD, John Hartle and wife Stephanie of Keedysville, MD, and Steve Hartle and wife Andrea Hartle of Keedysville, MD.

She was loved by many and will be missed dearly.
