David Lewis Herbst, 72, of Ringgold Maryland, passed away peacefully, at his home on
March 12, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones, He was born in Hagerstown,
Maryland on October 1, 1953. He was the son of the late John Christian Herbst and
Betty Jane (Fager) Herbst.
He was a Dairy farmer all his life on Misty Meadow Farm in Ringgold Maryland. David
was a lifelong supporter of the agriculture community in Washington County and the
State of Maryland. Some of his notable roles and accomplishments were: Master farmer

Agriculture Land Preservation Board, Chairman of Maryland Farm Bureau Young
Farmers and Washington County Young Farmers, Board Member of the Washington
County Ag-Expo and Fair, President, Vice President and board member of Washington
County Farm Bureau, 2012 Washington County Farm of the year, Deacon, Trustee and
Chairman of Board at Ringgold Church of Christ. President and Vice President of
Ringgold Ruritan, Owner and operator of Misty Meadow Farm and Creamery. The Farm
has been honored as a Dairy of Distinction in the state of Maryland. The Farm and
Creamery hosted many groups from around the world as well as Extension service, Soil
Conservation and Lely Robotic Milkers, as well as hundreds of school children, church
groups, youth groups and homeschools. Misty Meadow Farm Creamery has been
members of the county and state Ice Cream trails and Members of National Ice Cream
Retailers Association. He was also an avid lover of cruises and traveled with his wife to
the Caribbean, Alaska, New England, Canada and Mexico.
He attended Jacob’s Church in Fairfield, PA.
David is Survived by his wife of 44 years, Betsy (Palmer) Herbst, three daughters:
Katherine Long and Husband Brooks, Jennifer Malott and Husband Justin, Kimberly
West and Husband Sean and Son Andrew and wife Jacklyn, Eleven grandchildren-
Kaleb Long, Addison Malott, Brielle Long, Jillian Malott, Deklan Herbst, Vivian Malott,
Evelyn West, Ella Malott, Parker West, Oliver West and Charlotte West; two brothers
John Herbst and Donald Herbst.
Out of all of David’s accomplishments he said he was the proudest of his Kids and
Grandkids and the name “Pap”.
The Family will host a Celebration of Life/ Memorial Service at Misty Meadow Farm
Creamery on May 3 rd from 1-4 pm. Feel free to bring lawn chairs.
