E. LaFern "Sam" Smith, 92, of Smithsburg, MD, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Hospice of Washington County Doey's House in Hagerstown, MD.
Born September 4, 1931, in Smithsburg, MD, she was the daughter of the late Robert Clopper and Mabel Wolfe.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John Raymond "Bill" Smith, who passed away December 11, 2002. They were married on April 12, 1952.
She attended Smithsburg High School.
She was a homemaker and loving mother and grandmother.
She was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Smithsburg where she was a longtime Alter Guild Leader and volunteer of Divine Deliveries and a member of the Smithsburg Lioness Club, Sunshine Leisure Club, Red Hat Society and Trinity Quilters Group.
Sam is survived by her daughter, Denise L. Hobbs, her cherished grandson, Alexander J. Hobbs, half siblings, Patricia Steinmetz (Steve), Jack Wolfe, Ben Clopper (Sally) and Priscilla Harsh (John), goddaughters, Kim Kirkpatrick Hill and Amy Kunkle White and many nieces and nephews. Many thanks to her adopted family, Mary and Dean White, who looked out for her and did so much for her over the past few years.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by son-in-law, Alfred Hobbs and half siblings, Terry Wolfe, Jerry Wolfe, and Beverly Miller.
There will be no viewing.
Services will be held Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 11:00am at Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg, MD, with Pastor Virgil Cain and Pastor Richard Hembrock officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the caregivers of Doey's House for their excellent care and compassion showed to Sam and them during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Sam Smith to Trinity Lutheran Church, 16 N. Main St., P.O. Box 217, Smithsburg, MD 21783.
