Gertrude Snyder (McBride) 77, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away at Gettysburg Hospital on September 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on June 12, 1947, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Terence and Helen McBride. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 33 years, Charles Snyder, and her beloved sister, Patricia Black.
Gertrude will be held forever in our hearts, and will always be remembered for her warmth, kindness, wisdom, and empathy. These qualities and her optimism were contagious to all around her. And, it was her sense of empathy that made her well-suited for her career at The ARC of Washington County, where she always ensured that clients were treated respectfully.
Gertrude loved spending time with family and friends, and would ceaselessly endeavor to turn every visit into a “party”. (“Party” according to the Gertrude Snyder dictionary is defined as board games, card games, music videos, movies, good food, and spirits.) She enjoyed camping, boating, and traveling, and loved being on or near any body of water whether it be the Atlantic, the Chesapeake or dam 5 on the upper Potomac.
Some of her hobbies included reading, video games, and following politics. She loved to read and could’ve filled a football stadium with the eclectic library of books she read, from Agatha Christie to the most absurd zombie books.
Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Brian) Dietrich of Clear Spring, Md., her son, Francis (Elizabeth) McBride of Emmitsburg, Md., her stepson, Duane Snyder of Jacksonville, FL., her grandchildren Casey Taddei, Heather Taddei, and Rachel Hudgins, and her pets, Blondie, Rosie, Jasmine, Maggie Mae, and Bobby McGee.
Arrangements were made by J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, MD. Online condolences may be offered at www.jldavisfh.com.
