JOHN MICHAEL SCHMAUS

John Michael Schmaus passed away suddenly on January 16, 2023, in Hagerstown, MD.

Born in Carlisle, PA, July 11, 1940, he was son the of the late Stella Manning Schmaus and John Schmaus, he graduated from Carlisle High School, class of 1958.

While in high school he worked for Western Union, eventually at various locations, often being assigned to Camp David when the president was in residence due to his speedy typing skills. He served in the United States Army, stationed in Turkey. After the closure of most Western Union Offices, he worked as a professional gambler until his death. He was the owner of several thoroughbred racehorses as well and enjoyed the sport.

John is survived by his loving and long-time companion, Gail Donus, as well as his nieces, Lisa Brousse and Suzanne Nagle.

He is preceded in death by his brother, James Henry Schmaus (Wife Patricia), and sister, Stella May Schmaus.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no service.

Internment in Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown, NY, will take place at the convieniance of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made I his memory to the Jasper Fund for the Chautauqua County Humane Society, Chautauqua Region Community foundation at 418 Spring Street, Jamestown, NY, 14701.
