Joann (Dickson) Hanrahan

Joann Hanrahan of Smithsburg, MD passed away peacefully on Sunday November 13, 2022, at Hearthstone Retirement Home in Waynesboro, PA.

Born Friday, March 13, 1936, during the Johnstown Flood, in Ebensburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late David Dougherty and Jean Dickson.  

Joann was a 1954 graduate of Ebensburg High School and a 1957 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA where she received a registered nursing degree.  

She worked for over 40 years in nursing in Pittsburgh at Mercy Hospital and The Baptist Home in Mt Lebanon, PA.

After relocating to New Jersey, she worked in nursing at Manor Care Rehabilitation until her retirement.  

Joann moved to Hagerstown, MD in 2019 where she attended St Ann Church.

She is survived by her 5 children: David (Eva) of Chicago, IL, Jill (Bill) Fowkes of Smithsburg, MD, William, Jr of Tampa FL, Donald (Morgan) of Wake Forest, NC, Debra of Sewell, NJ, 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, and one stepsister, Sonia Reidelbach of Ebensburg, PA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 59 years William, Sr. and a sister Lois Collins.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at 1:00 pm at St Ann Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave, Hagerstown, MD with Monsignor Bruce Jarboe officiating.  Family will receive friends one hour prior to mass.  Special thanks for Hearthstone Retirement Home and Spirit Trust Lutheran Hospice for their excellent care.
