Judith Lee Smith, formerly of Chewsville, MD and Washington, D.C., died Thursday, November 6, 2025, at Fahrney-Keedy Senior Living Community, Boonsboro, MD.
Born December 23, 1937 in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Edward Wade Smith and Ruby Harp Smith. Judy spent her early years in Cavetown, then moved to Boonsboro where she attended Boonsboro High School, graduating in 1955 as class Valedictorian.
Not having a car, she lived with the Seward family in Hagerstown. This enabled her to attend Hagerstown Junior College and work in the office at McCrory's Five and Dime. After HJC, she attended The American University in Washington, D.C., graduating with a B.A. in Communications.
Judy made her home in D.C. During her career, she was an editor for many organizations including the American Psychological Association, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, John Hopkins Hospital, and the Bureau of National Affairs.
Judy was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor. She had a great love for animals, especially cats, of which she had many over the years. She was a voracious reader and loved needlework, history, going to the theatre, and watching her beloved Boston Red Sox. She was also very active in the ASPCA of Washington, D.C., and served on the condo board of her community.
Judy is survived by several cousins, including Sigrid Knode, with whom she resided during the last two years, and Heidi Black.
The family would like to thank the first floor staff at Fahrney-Keedy for taking such excellent care of Judy. Also, many, many thanks to Judy's D.C. friends for their care and concern, and who meant the world to her.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 7 at 1 PM at Bethel United Methodist Church, 21006 Twin Springs Dr. Smithsburg, MD 21783, with Reverend John W. Schildt officiating.
Memorial Donations may be made to the ASPCA , PO Box 96929, Washington, D.C. 20090-6929.
