July 29, 1952 ~ January 20, 2024 (age 71) 71 Years Old

Laura Jo Smith, age 71, passed away peacefully at her home on January 20th surrounded by family. Laura was married to her high school sweetheart, Jim Smith, for 48 years. Along with her husband, she is survived by her daughters Jaime Mott and Jenna Smith, son-in-law Brian Mott, and grandkids Hayleigh and Sydney Mott and Kaydyn Smith. She is also survived by her sisters Judy Cadwell, Jeri Lyn Kober, and Jeanne Coley, as well as her loving brothers-in-law and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Laura was born on July 29, 1952, to Jerrold Lee and Mary Lou Wise. She spent her childhood in the DC/MD area and finally settled in Germantown, MD when she was in 8th grade. She graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1970 and attended Georgetown University where she studied radiology. She worked as an X-ray technician for some time before transitioning to a career at C&P/Bell Atlantic/Verizon. After retiring from the phone company, she began working for Montgomery County Public Schools where she brought a smile to the faces of all her students, parents, and staff. Laura was a social butterfly and truly loved interacting with everyone she came into contact with.

Family was the most important thing to Laura. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she loved them more than anything. She could often be found sharing their pictures and bragging about them to anyone who would listen. She gave the best hugs and always knew how to make everyone feel loved. Her loss leaves a giant hole in all of our hearts.

Laura’s final wishes were for her family to gather for a private celebration of life to share stories and reminisce, therefore we will not be having a public service. If you’d like to pay your respects by making a donation in her name, she was a supporter of both Children’s National Hospital and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and would surely appreciate any contributions made to either one.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
