Luisa Darlene Lander Herbert (83), formerly of New Jersey and currently residing in Maryland, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024. Born on July 9, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio, to Ellen Louise Taylor Lander and Frederick Douglas Lander, Luisa dedicated her life to serving others. Her professional career spanned various roles, including Community Coordinator for Burlington County, where she championed the establishment of a hospice, and Assistant Evaluation Counselor. She also worked with Crossroads Runaway for Adolescents and Burlington County Board of Social Services, serving as a stewardess for Local 1086 and contributing to the employee bulletin and union paper. Luisa retired as a certified social worker from the New Jersey Division of Pensions on October 1, 1995. A devoted member of Macedonia Baptist Church since 1983, Luisa held various leadership positions, including Senior Choir President and Secretary of the Deaconess Ministry. Her faith in Christ guided her life, and she remained committed to her community, even after relocating to Ohio in 2019 and Maryland in 2023.
She was preceded in death by her beloved children, Kahadeejah Herbert and Akil Herbert Sr. Her legacy lives on through her sister, Jean Payne, children, Rashidah Herbert Kelly Islam and Hassan Herbert, 15 grandchildren, namely Ameerah, Akil Jr, DeVon, Ruquaiyah, Jamill, DeShawn, Marisol, Brittany, Marquis, Imani, Ashley, Jada, Jordan, Hassan, and Kahlil, 21 great-grandchildren, and a vast extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends. Her passing is deeply felt, as she was universally admired and loved. As John 6:47 promises, 'He that believes in me will have everlasting life.' 2 Corinthians 5:8 comforts us, 'to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.' Amen.
