Margaret Charleen Kline, 66, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Monday, October 4, 2021, at Hospice of Washington County, Doey’s House.
Born November 12, 1954, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Richard E. Kline, Sr. and Lillian C. “Pat” (Barnhart) Kline.
She was a graduate of Smithsburg High School class of 1972. Margaret received her A.A. Degree from Hagerstown Junior College, her B.S. Degree from the University of Maryland in 1976, and her M.S. Degree from the University of Maryland in 1979.
She is an author of over 60 publications and is a member of the American Chemical Society, the NIST / National Institute of Justice Technical Working Group on Biological Evidence Preservation, the American Type Culture Collection, and the Association for Molecular Pathology. Her honors include the: Standards Reference Materials Program Measurement Services Award in 1991 and 1995, NIST Bronze Metal Award in 1995, American Statistical Association W.J. Youden Award in Interlaboratory Testing in 2000; DoC Gold Medal Award in 2008; and the Judson C. French Award in 2014.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Greensburg, MD.
She was a member of the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company and a founding member with her father of the Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services where she served several terms as Chief.
She worked as a chemist for Litton Bionectics, Frederick Cancer Research Center, Fort Detrick from 1979-1986 and retired from NIST as a research biologist after 35 years of service.
Margaret enjoyed wood carving, photography, painting, putting her community first and loved her horses and animals.
Margaret is survived by one brother, Richard E. Kline, Jr., and several aunts, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one infant brother, Charles H. Kline and one sister-in-law, Nancy Kline.
Services will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 11:00am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Julie Brigham officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.
