Merle Holland Obituary

Merle David Holland, 72, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Williamsport Retirement Village, Williamsport, MD.

He was born on September 1, 1953, in Hagerstown, MD, to Eva (Grove) Holland and Floyd Holland, both deceased. Merle attended Williamsport schools.

A talented trim carpenter and skilled builder, Merle owned MAA (Merle, Ann, Angi) Construction for many years. As a custom home builder and general contractor, he left a lasting mark on the community through the beautiful, well constructed homes he helped create, culminating in several in the Brightwood East.

He was married to Ann Roberts Holland (deceased) for 37 years. They had a daughter Angela Lynn Bachtell whom he adored.

Merle spent many days fishing the Potomac River near the river bottom in Williamsport. He loved wetting a line below the PE dam, catching some amazing carp. He and his brother Richard (deceased) camped on Duck Island with their daughters many times. He absolutely loved dinners and drinks at Nick's Airport Inn where he felt like family.

Merle had a massive heart attack at 47. He had bypasses and stents and more stents. He was lucky to get 25 more years out of life. A testament to modern health care!!!!

He moved to Venice, FL 17 years ago, where he resided in his "candomium" (a trailer) in Bay Indies. He and his trusted cat, Trophy, until they moved back to Hagerstown in December.

Merle is survived by his loving Daughter, Angela, who devoted countless hours to his medical care, personal hygiene, household chores, meal prep and genuine love for his well being. He is also survived by Grandchildren, Danille Knepper, Tanner Bachtell and Hailey Bachtell; Great Granddaughter, Skyleigh Smith; Son in Law, Chip Bachtell; Sisters, Shirley Regina Yohe, Sharon Weaver and Myra Sue Holland. A special and loving thanks to Brandi Mitchell for her compassionate care for Merle these last couple months. The world needs more Brandi's!

Merle worked hard for years making sure the good people at Miller Brewing Company and Phillip Morris got Christmas bonuses. Another testament to modern health care. He will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Washington County, 1710 Underpass Way, Suite 300 Hagerstown, MD 21740.
