Mildred "Mickey" Myers Obituary

Mildred “Mickey” Louise Myers went to be home with the Lord on December 10, 2025. She was born March 25, 1934, in Chewsville, MD, to the late George R. and Beulah M. (Koogle) Poffenberger.  Mickey graduated from Hagerstown High School and continued her education at Hagerstown Junior College. She retired from Washington County Public Schools as a Title I instructor. When her children were in school, she served as PTA President and Band Boosters president. She also served on the Washington County Recreation and Parks Board and the Washington County Ethics Commission. As an active Republican all of her life, she served in leadership positions on the Washington County Republican Central Committee, the Republican Club, and served as precinct leader and chief election judge. She received the S. Eldred Rinehart Award in 2014 for her dedication to the Republican Party. Mickey served as Smithsburg's only female mayor for 20 years. Before that, she served 4 years as a Councilperson and Clerk/Treasurer. She also served on Smithsburg’s Election Board, Park Commission, and Historical Society. One of her proudest accomplishments was the development of Veterans Park. She spent countless hours seeking and implementing grant programs to bring this beautiful park to Smithsburg. Mickey was a member of the Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, where she served as Board Chairperson for many years and was active in all phases of the church. Mickey married the love of her life, Homer L. Myers, on October 11, 1952. They were married for 67 years until he passed on December 27, 2019. She is survived by one son, Terry L. Myers (Cindy), Sharon W. Shank Roberson (Danny), DeAnna J. Doyle, and Susan E. Wolfe (Steve). One of the many joys she had in life were her 11 grandchildren, Scott Shank (Kristin), Nina Wolfe, Jackie Kaetzel (Andy), Carrie Aaron (Patrick), Natalie Minnichbach (Jeff), Brent Myers (Melissa), Jamie Smith (Andy), Tommy Shank (Annalee), Mike Wolfe, Tessa Kirk (Reiley), and Mia Mertz (Sean). In addition, she is survived by 2 step-grandchildren, Adam Roberson (Robin) and Donavan Roberson (Anjie), 21 great-grandchildren, 6 step great-grandchildren, and 1 step great-great-grandson.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth V. Hessong, her brother Homer M.K. Poffenberger, and her son-in-law, John S. Shank II.  The family will receive friends from 11:00-1:00 on Saturday, December 13, at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg, MD 21783. The funeral service will start at 1:00. Interment will follow at Smithsburg Cemetery. Pastor Gabe Dodd will be officiating. The family invites guests to the Smithsburg Fire Hall for a celebration of life and food after the interment.  In lieu of flowers, donations can go to Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren, 20402 Beaver Creek Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
