Patricia Monahan Obituary

Patricia "Pat" Monahan, 81, of Smithsburg, Maryland passed away in the company of her loving husband on June 12, 2026. She was a beautiful and cherished wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, and she is already deeply missed.

Born in February of 1945 to parents Leota and Cmdr. Richard Huffman, USN, Pat lived in DC and Montana before settling in Washington County. Pat graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1963 and attended the National Legal Secretarial School. She worked for the U.S. Army Biological Labs of Ft. Detrick prior to devoting herself to raising her children. She later worked at the Smithsburg Branch of the Washington County Free Library for 33 years where she served as Manager/Head Librarian. When the new, modern Smithsburg Library opened in 2006 – it was a career highlight for Pat to serve as the first Librarian there. In retirement, Pat volunteered at Old Forge Elementary and Smithsburg Middle School libraries. At home she fondly practiced the Dewey Decimal System on her own collection!

Pat built many special traditions with her beloved grandchildren – many of which centered around her excellent cooking and baking. She was admired in the local community for the cinnamon rolls she shared at Christmas. In addition to these passions, Pat greatly enjoyed tending indoor plants and her outdoor ornamental gardens. “Ghee’s Garden” was a well-curated, colorful sanctuary where friends would visit to appreciate her green thumb. More than any hobby, Pat had a love for animals! She was preceded in death by her beloved dogs Heidi, Cinnamon, Bridget, Miss Woo, Kermit, Bear, Dixie, Baby, Captain Jack, and Reilly.

Pat is survived by her doting husband of 60 years, Jim Monahan. Just days prior to her passing, the family shared a wonderful celebration together to mark this magnificent milestone. Additional family left to cherish her memory are her daughters and sons-in-law, Kelly (Kenny) Kline, Kimberly (Josh McGrath) Monahan, grandchildren Cole Kline and Coryn Kline, brother Richard Huffman, sister-in-law Phyllis, nephews, and her niece.

The family will hold an informal Celebration of Life on Sunday, July 19, from 1:00PM-3:00PM at the Maplegrove Estates Community Center in Smithsburg. Should you desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Washington County Free Library, or an animal rescue of your choice.
