Patrick Gerald Buckley

Patrick G. Buckley, 88, was born on December 10th, 1931 and raised in the Bronx, New York. He passed away at his
home in Hagerstown on October 28th, 2020. His parents were Patrick and Katherine Buckley (O’Sullivan)
who immigrated from County Cork, Ireland. Patrick was the middle of five children. At age 13, Pat left
New York to attend St. Mary’s Catholic Seminary in South Langhorne, Pennsylvania, where he went to
high school and his first two years of college. At age 19, Pat left the seminary to volunteer in the US Air
Force and to serve in Korea. During the war Pat was stationed in Seoul, Korea from 1951 to 1952 as Staff Sergeant and Chaplain. His wartime decorations include the National Defense Service Medal and KoreanService Medal, amongst others. After Korea, Pat was stationed in Alabama, and then Baltimore, MD
where he met his wife Norma Lee Abey. After his service Pat finished his B.A. of Psychology from Loyola
College in Baltimore, while working at General Motors manufacturing where he advanced to Senior
Buyer in the purchasing department.
Pat moved his family in 1973 to Hagerstown, MD after purchasing the Hagerstown Motel and
Restaurant, and opened The Hunan Inn there shortly after the purchase. After selling the motel, Pat and family owned a 25-acre farm in Smithsburg, MD, and then the Serado Campground in Hagerstown.
Patrick then worked at the Washington County Board of Education as Purchasing Manager where he
retired in 1992.
Pat faithfully volunteered for 28 years on the Maryland Prisons’ Community Correctional Services
Committee; served for over 10 years on the board of Goodwill Industries; and served for over 15 years
on the board of directors for the Washington County ARC. He was a member of Elks Lodge 378 and
Morris Frock American Legion post 42.
He was proceeded in death by his wife of 62 years, Norma (Abey) Buckley (2016), his parents, and his
four siblings, Kathleen, Timothy, Mary, and Michael. Patrick was a dedicated and loving son, brother,
father, and grandfather to his family.
He is survived by three children, Mary House and husband Stephen House, Timothy Buckley and wife
Linda Buckley, and Patrick Buckley. Patrick has eight grandchildren, Bridget Buckley-Shadle and husband
Jason Shadle, Sam Buckley, Brenna Swope and husband Kery Swope, Tory Buckley, Hannah Hamby and
husband Garrett Hamby, Isaac Buckley, Rachel House, and Kate Sweeney. Patrick had four great-
grandchildren, Joseph Swope, Bradley Swope, Daniel Swope, and Adley Hamby.
A graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740 at
1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 2nd, 2020. A celebration of life will be held following the memorial at
the Clear Spring American Legion, 12335 Big Spring Rd., Clear Spring, MD 21722.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to ARC Washington County, Daybreak
Program, 18450 Showalter Road, Suite 102, Hagerstown, MD 21742, in memory of Patrick Buckley.
