Ralph O. Hendershot, 86, of Smithsburg, MD, passed away Friday, April 8, 2022, at his residence, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Born April 17, 1935, in Buck Valley, Pennsylvania, Ralph was the son of the late Melvin L. Hendershot and Ada P. (McCusker) Hendershot. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Ernest, Leroy, Robert, James, Marvin, Harold, Floyd and one sister, Violet Rosenberger. Ralph was a 1955 graduate of Fort Hill High School, in Cumberland, MD. He enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Fort Amador, Panama Canal Zone, where he met his wife, Catalina. After being honorably discharged from the military, he worked for the Department of Defense for 28 years. He spent his retirement years dedicated to his family, whom he always put first. His selflessness was admirable. He enjoyed watching football, gardening, spending time with his Grandsons and "Grand-dogs", trips with his wife, family gatherings and family vacations. He was a loyal fan of all sports played by his grandsons. He was known for his quick wit, which brought a smile and a chuckle to all he encountered. His ingenuity to fix all things was amazing and he was often relied upon for advice on anything and everything. His phone calls “just checking in and see how everybody was doing” or reminding us to do things, we definitely had forgotten about, will be missed. His memory amazed us until the very end. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Catalina Hendershot, two daughters, Diana L. Hendershot of Smithsburg, and Carolyn S. Ambush and her husband Wayne Ambush of Hagerstown, two grandsons, Ty Ambush and Collin Ambush, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Anwar Iqbal, Meadow Kidney Care, the caring staff of Hospice of Washington County and Father Earnest Cibelli, St. Mary Catholic Church, Hagerstown, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests, those wishing to honor Ralph, make memorial donations to St. Mary Catholic Church Hagerstown, MD, and Hospice of Washington County. There will be no visitation. A private graveside service will be held for the family.
