Robert L. “Bobby” Smith, 92, of Smithsburg, MD, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2021 at his home.
Born January 17, 1929, in Smithsburg, MD, he was the son of the late Stanley L. Smith and Verna (Tracey) Smith.
He was a graduate of Smithsburg High School class of 1947.
He was a veteran of the Korean War serving as a motor sergeant in snow bound Korea and received a purple heart.
He worked for Newman Auto Company in Smithsburg while in high school, owned and operated Bob’s City Service in Smithsburg from 1952 – 1955, worked at Fort Dietrick from 1959 – 1963 for the Army Installation Corp and retired from the U.S. Army Communications Command CONUS at Site R / Fort Ritchie in 1988 after 30 years of service.
He was a member of Salem Lodge #196 A.F. & A.M. of Smithsburg, Tall Cedars of Lebanon of Hagerstown, Elks Lodge #378 of Hagerstown, VFW of Waynesboro, American Legion post 211 of Funkstown, South Mountain Rod and Gun Club of Smithsburg, Eagles Inc of Waynesboro, Red Men Tribe #84 of Williamsport, AMVETS of Middletown, Fraternal Order of Police and a life member of the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company.
Bobby is survived by his wife of 66 years, Fran (Cauffman) Smith who he married July 24, 1954 and one son, Robert L. Smith, Jr. and fiancé Melissa Noble.
Services will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at 12:00pm at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, MD, with Rev. Ronald Kurtz officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery with military honors provided by the Joint Veterans Council of Washington County and the Marine Corp League.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
