Ronald Lee McKendrick (Smokey), 87, passed away in his home surrounded by his family on October 26, 2025.
Born on December 12, 1937 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late John and Ruby (Ritter) Mckendrick. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and the love of his life, Velma Proctor Mckendrick, they were married on December 14, 1957. He was also preceded in death by his parents John and Ruby (Ritter) Mckendrick and great-grandson Gabriel Dean Dingle. He is survived by his 7 children: Mark (Karen) Mckendrick of Waynesboro, Dawn (Vernon) Dingle of Smithsburg, Scott (Charlotte) Mckendrick of Waynesboro, Brian (Deana) Mckendrick of Waynesboro, Robin (John) Schroyer of Waynesboro, Sheila (Donald) Frankenfield of Greencastle, and Sherry (Scott) Emory of Waynesboro, 14 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren(+2 on the way). He is also survived by his brother Jack (Barb) Mckendrick of Waynesboro.
He was a member of the Rouzerville Christian Church where he served as trustee, National AARP, Owls Club of Waynesboro and served 3 years in the Waynesboro National Guard. He graduated from Waynesboro class of 1956. He was employed at Landis Tool co for 15 years and a self-employed mechanic from 1975 until his retirement in 2003. He also was a carpenter and did upholstery work in earlier years.
Smokey had a love of Nascar, fixing cars, his 57 chevrolet that he restored and his friends as well as those listed above. Smokey and Velma enjoyed traveling all over the United States, but his favorite places were Chincoteague Virginia where they camped annually and Velma’s home place in Leidy, PA.
Memorial Service at Rouzerville Christian Church (11977 Old Route 16 Waynesboro) at 11am Friday, October 31. Memorial donations can be made to Rouzerville Christian Church, same address. His body was donated to the MD State Anatomy board per his request.
