Russell A. Wolfinger, 86, of Hagerstown, passed peacefully Thursday, June 10, 2021.
Born June 25, 1934, in Washington County, MD, he was the son of the late Russell Wolfinger, Sr and the late Ethel (Eberly) Wolfinger. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Lois (Green) Wolfinger and son Richard (Rick) Wolfinger.
Russell attended school in Reid and Leitersburg, which he commonly referred to as Leitersburg University. He retired after 50 years of school bus driving which included time as a bus contractor/driver in Washington County, MD, Shalom Christian Academy in Marion, PA and Jefferson Local Schools in Madison County, OH. In addition to bus driving, he was a retired farmer who loved collecting antique farm machinery which he proudly used and displayed at the annual Smithsburg Steam & Craft show. After downsizing from the farm, he turned his love to toy tractors. He was a long-time member of the J.I. Case Collectors Association where he served as president for 8 years and a former President of the former Hagerstown Optimist Club. He was of strong Christian faith and a lifetime member of the Disciples of Christ & Church of Christ denominations.
He is survived by son Gary Wolfinger (Tammi) of Greencastle and daughter Mary Mullane, Hagerstown. One special granddaughter, his “Little Buddy” – Mari Mullane, Hagerstown, grandson Matthew Wolfinger (FL) & granddaughters Emma Hurst (FL) and Ashley Johnson (OH). Two sisters, Esther Fugate, Thurmont, MD and Carolyn Brogunier, Hagerstown, MD, four great grandchildren, many beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and his wonderful community of friends at Francis Murphy Senior Housing.
The family would like to extend a thank you to Dr. Jeffrey Hurwitz and staff, “Nurse Anna” with Spirit Trust Lutheran Home Care, and Hospice of Washington County for the wonderful care provided.
Services will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at 2:00pm at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Jim Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. Visitation will be held Tuesday June 15th from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, he has requested that memorial donations be made to the ALS Association and wishes to remind all who read this to always vote Republican.
