Obituary

Thomas M. (Tommy) McCleaf, 89, of Smithsburg MD, passed away to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 4, 2023.

Mr. McCleaf was the son of the late Mr. Frank B and Annie M. McCleaf.

He was born and raised in Rouzerville, PA. He was the husband of his loving wife, Mrs. J. Marlene McCleaf, and if you saw one, you seen them both.

On September 23, 2023, they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Thomas was a long-time member of St. Peters (Beard’s) Lutheran Church, where he was church President for nearly 40 years. He also was the treasurer for The Church Sunday School, sang in the church choir, and assisted his wife at her organist job. He was very dedicated and loved his church dearly.

Thomas also served as President of the former Beard’s Leitersburg Church Parish, where he and his wife received their ministry award for their service to the Church.

Member of and treasurer of the former: Smithsburg Food Bank, Smithsburg Church Association, and Dean Mouk Member Walk.

Member of and Thrivent for Aid Association of Lutherans.

Member and Vice President of the Lutheran Brotherhood.

Member and Vice President of the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Volunteer and supporter for many years for Holly Place Retirement Home of Hagerstown, MD.

Lifelong member and past Master of Salem Lodge #196 AF&AM of Smithsburg, MD. 

Lifelong member of Southern Jurisdiction of Cumberland Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Cumberland, MD.

Lifelong member of Queen Esther Chapter #3 of the Hagerstown Eastern Star of Hagerstown, MD.

Member of Hagerstown Tall Cedars, Forest #95 of Hagerstown, MD.

Lifelong member of Landis-McCleaf Marine Corp League, of Chambersburg PA.

Member of 29th Division association of Waynesboro, PA.

Lifetime Chair Member of WWII Memorial, of Washing D.C.

Member of the Moose Lodge #1000 and General Assembly Lodge #3000.

Lifelong member of ATHL Fire Company of Waynesboro, PA, where he served as a driver of their first ambulance.

Lifetime member of Smithsburg Fire Company, where he served as Assistant Chief and apparatus Driver.

Member of AARP.

Member of Smithsburg Historian Society and supporter of MD Veterans Club.

Member of the Winnebago and Okeechobee Park in Okeechobee, FL Campground, where he and his wife spent many winters in their motor home.

Served on advisor Board at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.

Former member of the Smithsburg Lions Club, where he served as a director and participated in their ministry.

He was a volunteer at the Maryland Theater for many years and received, along with his wife, Volunteer of the Year.

Mr. McCleaf worked as a mechanic at Nucc’s Metal Shop, and Mel Brown Bouch, where he held most all positions full and part time for years. He also worked at Marquete Cement Company in Hagerstown MD, as assistant storekeeper, and Director on the Plants Safety Committee, and for the United Parcel Service as a Delivery Driver, where he was forced to retire early due to a very serious accident.  

Mr. McCleaf is survived by his very loving wife Mrs. J. Marlene McCleaf, son, Craig L. McCleaf and wife Angela McCleaf, granddaughters, Erin Markovich and Bryan, Mary Kercheval and Bailey, Lynn McCleaf and Fiancé, Camryn Keller, and Kaitlyn McCleaf and friend Jarred Wilson, sister Mary Ann Potter, and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave, Smithsburg, MD, on Thursday, August 10, 2023, from 6:00-8:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023, at 11:00 am, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Smithsburg, MD, officiated by Pastor Cain.
