Wayne Austin Bittinger

Wayne A. Bittinger, 74, of Smithsburg, MD, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Meritus Medical Center of Hagerstown, MD. Born Thursday, January 6, 1944 in Oakland, MD, he was the son of the late Harry C. Bittinger, Sr. and Helen (Harvey) Bittinger. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Thelma Virginia (McCauley) Bittinger, June 29, 2011. They were married August 24, 1971. He was a graduate of Southern Garrett High School of Oakland, MD. Wayne was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Greensburg, MD, and Funkstown American Legion Dixon-Troxell Post #211. Wayne is survived by daughter, Sandi Ruth of Hancock, MD, son, David Ruth of West Chester, PA, brothers, Edward Bittinger of Waynesboro, PA, and Robert Bittinger of Easton, MD, grandchildren, Kristen Myers, Nicholas Ruth, Nathan Ruth, Abigail Ruth and Andrew Ruth and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Bittinger, Jr. Services will be held Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 10:00am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 13025 Greensburg Rd. Smithsburg, MD, with Pastor Julie Brigham officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be held at 3:00pm at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Accident, MD. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-8pm at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave. Smithsburg, MD.
